Born in Madrid in 1960, Carlos Barrantes is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Photographie in Arles. In 1993 he created a custom darkroom laboratory where he mastered several historic printing processes. He specialises in platinotypes and carbon prints, to which he has added platinum-chrome, a hybrid photochemical-digital process. He also makes traditional silver prints as well as practising other early processes (salt paper, albumen, gum bichromate, cyanotype, Vandyke, …). Originally installed in Palma de Mallorca, he moved his laboratory to Perpignan in 2006. Carlos Barrantes frequently organises workshops on these techniques (ENS Louis Lumière, ENSP d’Arles).
His photographic series have been exhibited in Spain, France, Italy and the Ivory Coast. His works are held in diverse public and private collections (Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Musée Carnavalet, Fundació Miro, Majorque, Collección Rafael Tous, Barcelone, …).
